Slow loading web pages to be penalised by Google

Google have announced that their Chrome browser will soon be monitoring websites that are slow loading. A warning message will be displayed to let you know the website they are attempting to view could take a while to load. This will typically affect websites with large amounts of content especially images. We see this as a bit of a retrograde decision with so many countries now enjoying quick broadband speeds but there is a possible data use issue so lite websites could save Google a lot of money. Here at Oast House Media we have been aware of image size for some time and filter all images supplied for our...

Clients working for clients

Two local web design clients have joined up for a construction project near Canterbury. Hartlee Tree Surgeons have commissioned Stevenson Builders to build a new extension. Andy and Clive Stevenson specialise in older buildings having just completed the Kersney Abbey refurbishment for Coombs in Dover, this Victorian property will not be such a challenge but matching old to new is a skill in its own right. Both Stevenson Builders and Hartlee Tree Surgeons have completed work for Oast House Media, and very good work it was to!

PUBG visit to Amsterdam

Last weekend director Nigel Stevenson took a flying visit to European PUBG gaming HQ in Amsterdam. Son Jack is the corporate designer for PUBG putting together graphics for game covers, game features and corporate promo material. To put the size of this popular on-line game into perspective, Nigel’s Oast House Media web designs are viewed in the local area with a potential audience of just under 250,000, Jacks signed up on-line audience is 600 million worldwide! For the budding young designers out there, Jack’s artistic career started at Canterbury College and UCA Rochester, first job was for Medway based gaming company and then onto PUBG. Still in his 20’s Jack’s...

FireBox new web design coming soon

Firebox Kent are a new start-up business based in Deal, just down the road from Oast House Media. The new website is in progress and will go live later this month but to get the Google Bot interested we post these news blogs with a link to the holding page. We also updated their logo design for all media use, in this case without charge as it’s a font based design and took just a few minutes to complete. Long term this will save the client hours/£s of re-design work as we supply the original Ai file and export files for print, signage and web. With the new logo in...

Drone videos enhance fishing lakes website

Existing client Sandwich Lakes situated between Eastry and Sandwich in Kent contacted us earlier in the year requesting a few changes to their site plan diagram created by us a few years ago. We suggested drone videos to enhance the browser experience and to encourage the potential fisherman to visit the lakes. So off we set on a lovely sunny day earlier this month with our drone man Chris to fly and record over all the lakes and caravan/motorhome facilities. The results we think are spectacular! see website page: sandwichlakes.co.uk/our-lakes

Protecting your products and services like Rioja wine?

Counterfeiting is an age old problem and is probably more prevalent today than it has ever been. For example, here at Oast House Media we are always banging on about image use and copyright – either protecting your original work or using someone elses. We’ve seen many cases (no pun intended) of clients coming to us with images and sometimes text copied directly from a competitors website in clear breach of UK copyright law. The whole subject is a minefield and a very expensive one if you get it wrong. One of the earliest examples of a company trying to protect their produce was the famous Rioja wine brand. In...

Jack Stevenson – the next generation of design

It’s always nice to show off a bit about your kids especially when they have a bit of success, son Jack Stevenson is alas the only off spring to join director Nigel Stevenson in the design trades.   “Like me, Jack also studied at Medway College of Design but these days it’s accredited with university status. I left art college with a City and Guilds, Jack has a design degree. Same meat different gravy you could say but it was nice to know we both shared the same inspirational space. After leaving college in 1975 I started work with GEC Marconi at Rochester Airport and 23 years later aspired to...

Limited Company? You need to read this declaration requirement for all UK websites

As web designers in Kent we work with a range of company types from sole traders to LTDs, recently we’ve noticed that some LIMITED companies are not complying to the law which requires all LIMITED companies to declare their status, here’s a direct quote from the government website: www.gov.uk/running-a-limited-company/signs-stationery-and-promotional-material Stationery and promotional material You must include your company’s name on all company documents, publicity and letters. On business letters, order forms and websites, you must show: the company’s registered number its registered office address where the company is registered (England and Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland) the fact that it’s a limited company (usually by spelling out the company’s full...

Brexit logo – clever design or created in a rush?

Oast House Media have been designing logos for local businesses for over 20 years. It’s not as simple as some of the designs look, for a start they have to reproduce on all media from embroidered workwear, web designs, litho printing to large format posters and signage. Over the years we’ve created some nice work and still see our handiwork on vans, websites and adverts. When we saw the new Brexit logo we were intrigued because even this had raised the eyebrows of the electoral elite. If you voted in the Euro election you would have seen the black/white version of the Brexit logo clearly pointing at the vote box...

Print design and production for music school

Long before the web was invented by Tim Berners-Lee, Oast House Media director Nigel Stevenson was designing for print. It’s not something we advertise but it’s always nice when a print job comes into the office. Make Time for Music have been print customers for nearly 10 years so it was nice to get a new design commission from new owner James Walker. James required a flyer to promote his music tuition in schools, the design had to be DL size, quick to read and eye catching. Oast House Media sourced the free high quality images and created the design. OHM also managed the proof process, print production and delivery....
