Tracking your website’s Google position

We reported this topic a few months ago but SEO (search engine optimisation) has changed so here’s our latest ‘best practice’ guide update. Using Google’s webmaster tools is fine and we recommend it as a great SEO tool but you can’t beat a manual test – this is how we track our Google position on Google SERPs (search engine results pages). Clear your browsing history First and foremost you MUST clear any history cached by your web browser (it changes results), on our devices using Firefox the ‘clear history’ is under the ‘history’ tab, nice and easy. Ideally you need to clear this every time you search (We’ve got an...

Upgrade to WordPress Google friendly web pages

Over the past two years we’ve been converting old html static page websites to WordPress web pages Why? In April 2015 Google changed it’s delivery policy on results pages, it clearly stated, having identified that over 50% of its results were viewed on mobile devices, that all websites needed to be ‘mobile friendly‘ or as we call it in the trade – ‘responsive’. Google set up a checking service: search.google.com/test/mobile-friendly to help developers and designers to evaluate existing pages. Here at OHM we decided to design all new websites using WordPress and for good reason: Google likes WordPress and the 2 companies work closely together SEO is built into all...

five web design mistakes

5 common website design fails

We’ve been designing websites for Kent businesses for nearly 20 years, in that time we’ve seen some common mistakes made buy business owners who should have gone to the professional. Here are our top five website design fails… The biggest error you can make is buy into a cheap template design like Wix or Yell Template websites simply do not work on Google, optimisation is not available and in many cases content and images are shared – Google wants to see original content. Although they advertise support, very often after the honeymoon period your calls and emails are ignored. Long term, costs are usually much higher than a pro-design. Not...

Google app searches continue to deliver different results

Since last April 2015 when Google officially changed to its ‘mobile friendly’ web page requirements we’ve been monitoring our own search terms using our unique keyword benchmark techniques Our first full test was completed back in March 16, we’ve just completed another deep search with some interesting results. See table… The first set of searches were competed on a desktop PC (not mobile) and then using the same search terms on the office HTC M8 mobile phone using the popular Google app. You can see that the mobile device is influenced by our ‘mobile friendly’ website and continued SEO policy of refreshing data (usually using news posts) Keyword search string...

National SEO campaign commission kicks up a stink!

Local sewage pump company A and C Pumps based in Nonnington are one of the UK’s top pump re-sellers in the UK. Their pump systems are in use all over the country from individual properties with a flood problem to housing and industrial sites in a floodplain. They’re not the sort of hardware you would see anywhere unless you knew where to look as they are usually underground which is also an issue with their web profile. As with many companies we have a lot of success with unique trade keywords and geographical location, so for example if you Google “sewage pumping stations in Kent” our client is page one,...

Top tips for your garden! A website health check for the summer

You know when you watch or listen to gardening programs they suggest jobs to do that week? I’m going to be an expert gardener and suggest some website design and SEO ideas for your summer. Prune your apple trees, this encourages more fruits the following year… Take a look at your web pages and be critical about the content. You have about 20 seconds on the home page to hold your potential new customer before he/she goes off to your competitors website. Is the grass trim, does the foliage look good? Make sure your delicate plants are well irrigated during dry spells… Google loves refreshed content and thanks you for...

google boolean searches

More accurate Google searches – the Boolean way using ‘search operators’ and symbols

We’ve been aware of Boolean searches for some time but we thought it would be a good bit of research for our website design clients to investigate how to improve search results using Google. A Boolean search is the same as any search you carry out on Google but by using the Boolean technique it is possible to create a hybrid search that delivers more accurate results. Here’s an example: you know roughly what you want but can’t remember the exact word or phrase so you can insert ‘*’ (asterisks) to act as a wild card. Google then tries to match the missing word(s) a * saved is a *...

Spy in the cab website in the fast lane (update)

The tachograph has been euphemistically called the ‘the spy in the cab’ for years but did you know it was originally used on trains? The Daniel Tachometer was used on railways in 1844 and in 1985 tachographs were mandatory throughout the EEC for commercial trucks. I’m not saying that Faversham based Operator Compliance owner Clive Glaze has been specialising in Tachograph Analysis since 1844 but he certainly packs in the knowledge with over 20 years in the business. As an existing client we offered Clive a ‘like-for-like’ conversion to a Google mobile friendly ‘responsive’ website design last year (2015) through our regular client newsletters. With the transport trade mostly using...
