nominet web names

Web name scammers at it again

It’s been a few years since the last reported web name scam but sadly it’s back. Thankfully the client called me first to check if this was a legitimate sale and we managed to save them £400! Firstly and before I explain the scam, Google only recognises one web name per web site. If you try and submit more than one it may penalise you so remember…One web name per website The scam Phone rings, usual pre-amble, “are you the business owner” etc quickly followed by an offer on one or more web names that will be closely associated to your active web name and/or business (they do their homework...

sandwich lakes new wordpress theme

WordPress website re-theme

We built the new Sandwich Lakes website earlier this year, see blog; but having reviewed the site a few months later the owner wanted to make more of their high quality image archive. The site, as it stood, was using a very WordPress theme but the content overlay structure took away the image impact. We did some research and suggested a new theme with virtually no home page text, what do you think? See website sandwichlakes.co.uk There’s one big issue that we also made the client aware of, not having content on the home page (Google’s first point of contact) may reduce SEO presence. There are many factors that make...

BT (and PlusNet) users cut off again!

We had several calls yesterday (Wed, 20th June 16) from clients having problems with the emails. Fortunately it was fixed by BT quickly but some business could not function for a few hours. Here’s the BBC report: BT and Plusnet users have been unable to access some websites again, after problems with the service yesterday. The firm said the fault stemmed from Telehouse North, an exchange in London’s Docklands. Telehouse North confirmed that its network had been affected by a tripped circuit breaker but that engineers were now on site. There were reports of other organisations experiencing connectivity trouble, including HMRC. On Wednesday, many customers found they were unable to...

Google app searches continue to deliver different results

Since last April 2015 when Google officially changed to its ‘mobile friendly’ web page requirements we’ve been monitoring our own search terms using our unique keyword benchmark techniques Our first full test was completed back in March 16, we’ve just completed another deep search with some interesting results. See table… The first set of searches were competed on a desktop PC (not mobile) and then using the same search terms on the office HTC M8 mobile phone using the popular Google app. You can see that the mobile device is influenced by our ‘mobile friendly’ website and continued SEO policy of refreshing data (usually using news posts) Keyword search string...

Canterbury city scape

Local photographer used for Canterbury client images

We’d just completed the draft design for our long term client Langridge IFA (see case study) and agreed with the owner Geoff Langridge to source and use local area photos as part of the web page design. I’d already found a very nice ‘city-scape’ photo on an image library but the image had been pulled from stock leaving me with egg on face. Despite spending some considerable time looking for a replacement I couldn’t find anything like it. I was suffed! We’ve worked with local photographers in the past so I called old friend Trev Liberson from Whitstable who has a large collection of local work but alas not the...

National SEO campaign commission kicks up a stink!

Local sewage pump company A and C Pumps based in Nonnington are one of the UK’s top pump re-sellers in the UK. Their pump systems are in use all over the country from individual properties with a flood problem to housing and industrial sites in a floodplain. They’re not the sort of hardware you would see anywhere unless you knew where to look as they are usually underground which is also an issue with their web profile. As with many companies we have a lot of success with unique trade keywords and geographical location, so for example if you Google “sewage pumping stations in Kent” our client is page one,...

Top tips for your garden! A website health check for the summer

You know when you watch or listen to gardening programs they suggest jobs to do that week? I’m going to be an expert gardener and suggest some website design and SEO ideas for your summer. Prune your apple trees, this encourages more fruits the following year… Take a look at your web pages and be critical about the content. You have about 20 seconds on the home page to hold your potential new customer before he/she goes off to your competitors website. Is the grass trim, does the foliage look good? Make sure your delicate plants are well irrigated during dry spells… Google loves refreshed content and thanks you for...

favicon logos for websites

What is a web page Favicon logo?

Have you ever wondered what the little logo is called that sits next to the address bar on your web browser? You see them on every website, usually it’s the default favicon logo supplied with your browser but increasingly the logo is customised to match the owners corporate logo. What is Favicon? Favicon is an abbreviation for ‘favourite icon’ and was recognised for the first time in 1999 when Microsoft introduced IE4 (internet explored 4). The file is usually very small, just 16 x 16 pixels/” and needs to be ‘coded’ into the <head> content of all web pages, like this: <link rel=”icon” href=”favicon.ico” type=”image/x-icon” />. Our WordPress website themes...

Mr Dapper barbers new website

Close shave for Deal based barbers new WordPress website design

In my local town the competition is cut throat for barbers with a 300% increase in local salons. Add to that the increase in folk moving to the area and the changes in browser habits when searching, these local Deal based businesses must be available on-line. My barber for nearly 20 years recently opened a new traditional barbers shop in the centre of Deal which caters for the new look gentlemens hair and beard trim or as Steve puts it “old school trend setting barbershop in Deal“. I’ve also enjoyed a wet shave using a traditional ‘cut throat’ and have to say it was a very relaxing experience. As you...

New roofer website, client is blown away

Renowned roofing have been clients for over six years and like many other client, and having read our regular website newsletter, decided to update their old web pages to a WordPress website design. Owner Ryan Holah gave us a simple brief – get on with it! So a like-for-like design using existing content (copy writing created by us) was commenced. The problem with the old site was imagery. So much had changed over the years and had very few good quality images archived so we suggested using supplier images. Quality images from suppliers We had to be careful and ensure copyright law was not compromised so we contact Renowned Roofing’s...
