WordPress refresher training on-line

Last month we completed another WordPress training session but this time it was for an existing client who’d already had WordPress training. With Covid19 keeping everyone in lock-down we understand that many clients would like to take advantage of the spare time and update their WordPress websites. For the lock-down period, Oast House Media are offering FREE on-line WordPress training*. First up was Joe Kidd from Kent based mobile opticians Sightcall. Joe’s in South East London and self isolating with his family, however as WordPress is a cloud based application he could log-into his Dashboard from home and we accessed Joe’s device using remote access software and walked him through...

Covid 19, an opportunity not to be missed?

Firstly, can we wish you well for the coming weeks. Covid 19 is biting deep into businesses as we see many of our clients forced to close their operations after BoJo’s statement last night (23-3-20). I think we can all see that long term it’s for the good but what are the advantages of a business lock down? The good news, your website will carry on working for you 24/7, enquiries may dry up for a while but Google will carry on checking your pages and re-caching content. Experts predict a big trend towards on-line sales as more people are forced to use websites to purchase items. The fall out...

junk mail and spam from e-forms

High volume email clients use Office 365

Over the past couple of years we’ve been spending more time working with high volume email users. By definition, these are normally companies with more than 3 email accounts (per web name) and/or using the imap mail delivery system. Our mail servers are limited to a storage capacity of 500mb or less, this is more than enough for pop3 users (usually office desktop devices) but we are seeing an increasing usage from iPhone device users, that’s because the iPhone/imap email process doesn’t delete a message from the server after it has been viewed. This so called ‘stacking’ is removing valuable server space from other web services. As from 1st January...

Client “responds” to web design service

New client (see news post) Shaun Hopkins shared his thoughts with us, so we’d like to do a little boast. Always nice to get some feedback especially when it’s a positive one. See more web design client reviews

QDF Google algorithm puts OHM clients on page 1

OHM have been aware of the Google QDF algorithm for some time and used it to delivery page 1 national search status for clients i the past. QDF means Query Deserves Freshness and is a Google ranking factor served up when a search query uses search terms that match a ‘spike’ of data requests. In laymans terms if Google is being hit with a spike of similar searches Google will change its search algorithm to find recent content rather than quality content. You can see this every day with news trends like a statement from the PM, corona virus and sports news etc. When you search for that information the...

The power of back links

A few years ago back links to your web pages from directories and other larger websites were the best way to get your website top of Google. In fact a lot of investment went into link building and link farming, a truly global and lucrative business. Then, overnight Google said NO! Google was placing websites on its search engine results pages (SERPs) in order of popularity, that popularity was assessed on back links, the more back links, the more popular you are and if the back link was from a rated web address you got even more of a boost. So you can see why link building became a bit...

Print design for web clients

Our newsletters help us to let website design clients know we’re not just a one trick pony. Print design has been a core design skill for Oast House Media since it’s creation in 2004. Director Nigel Stevenson originally came from a print design background long before scientist Tim Berners-Lee created the world wide web. Indeed, it is those original skill sets that gives OHM the edge over other web based designers in Kent with extensive print production knowledge and an awareness of life outside the internet especially when it comes to logo design. Working with our local print and print finishing partners, OHM can offer the complete ‘one stop’ media...

A recent design is for their summer schools, a national promotion, the client asked for a cartoon style design with the instruments they will be teaching on. Graphics were sourced from libraries keeping the costs down on this A5 design. see previous print design for this company

google search no result

What words get a no result on Google searches, the !! story

There aren’t many searches that result in “Your search did not match any documents” on Google and as the worlds biggest search engine refines its search algorithms it’s unlikely to be beaten – or is it? Many years ago in the early days of search engine optimisation development we discovered that the first letter of the keyboard alphabet is not an ‘A’ as we all assume, but ‘!’ – the exclamation mark. With this knowledge it was easy to trick simple search engines if we used the exclamation mark as part of the title or reference text cached by the search database. For example we were top of all searches...
