A few years ago back links to your web pages from directories and other larger websites were the best way to get your website top of Google. In fact a lot of investment went into link building and link farming, a truly global and lucrative business.
Then, overnight Google said NO!
Google was placing websites on its search engine results pages (SERPs) in order of popularity, that popularity was assessed on back links, the more back links, the more popular you are and if the back link was from a rated web address you got even more of a boost.
So you can see why link building became a bit of a scam and link building companies were scamming Google with fake link sites.
However Google didn’t completely ditch its links algorithm and still gives some value to respected sites like .gov, local directories, trade sites and dedicated link building sites like UK Listings
